One of the fathers of American Jazz, Gershwin won the approval of serious music critics for his jazz inspired piano and orchestral compositions, raising jazz to the level of a ”serious” art form. While in his early twenties Gershwin achieved first national and not long thereafter international fame with the publication and performance in 1924 of Rhapsody in Blue, the world’s first jazz piano concerto. In 1928 Gershwin published An American in Paris, an all orchestra work inspired by and writt...en during his 1928 visit to Europe. American duo pianists Frances Veri and Michael Jamanis are considered to be among the leading interpreters of George Gershwin’s music. Since their debut concert at New York’s Lincoln Center in 1970 they have given over a thousand concerts in the United States, Europe, and Asia. They have appeared in four television shows and on numerous talk shows. They have released over twenty albums, including the critically acclaimed ”Gershwin—The Complete Piano Music” which, according to the American Record Guide writes ”Anyone interested in Gershwin must hear VERI & JAMANIS, a revelation into Gershwin’s thinking—the playing exemplary.” On February 4th Veri & Jamanis will perform exceprts from their upcoming March 26th Carnegie Hall concert, including Gershwin’s little known, rarely performed two-piano versions of Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris, and Variations on ’I Got Rhythm’ a set of variations of Gershwin\'s hit song from the musical Girl Crazy. Veri and Jamanis are both graduates of the New York Juilliard School of Music as well as the Fontainbleu School of Music. They are the founders of the Pennsylvania Academy of Music, a private, not-for-profit school dedicated to providing affordable, high quality, music instruction to children and young adults of all ages and skill levels.
