Ektar play contemporary improvisatory chamber music and made their debut in autumn 2002 at the Győrfree music festival. Their compositions are influenced by Balkan, Far East and African musical cultures but in their more strictly structured works, we can also detect the imprint of mediaeval, European folk and contemporary music. Ek-tar is an Indian word meaning: one string and the four musicians endeavour in their expression, melodic variations and rhythms to fuse together as though playing a si...ngle string. Often referred to as the British Ry Cooder, as the son of a vocalist and producer, he spent much of his early life in the Middle East, where Arabic music truly shaped his sensitive ear. When he returned to the UK in the seventies, he was fascinated by punk and pop before again being drawn to the melodies of different cultures. He placed ancient trance music into a modern guise without compromising the traditional music’s soul. Justin Adams is today one of the finest and most creative guitarist-composers. He has worked with numerous musicians in the world music field, such as Sinead O’Conor, Natacha Atlas and Peter Gabriel. As a producer, he worked with several bands, and he helped the French band LO’JO and Tuareg Tinariwen in their own album publications. He is currently giving concerts with a new formation. With Les Triaboliques, along with guitarist Lu Edmonds and multi-instrumentalist Ben Mandelson he tries to bring together the most diverse strands of world music. Their first concert was given in Siberia. The trio aims to introduce to the Western world the sonorities of desert blues, Turkish saz and cümbüş, the mandolin and barizouki.
