We’ve been waiting for her year after year and now finally she has come. We shall welcome one of the most popular singers in the world at the Palace of Arts, an artist whom it is hard to categorise: gospel, soul, rhythm and blues, pop and jazz are all part of her musical personality. Dionne Warwick was born in 1940 in New Jersey, USA and after learning everything there was to know about gospel music in church, she organised her own group, the Gospelaires. They enjoyed success in the late fiftie...s at which point Dionne attracted the attention of one of the great song writing duos in pop history, Burt Bacharach and Hal David. This led to Dionne Warwick’s first international hit in 1962, Don’t Make Me Over. The trio worked together for a decade, producing numerous songs for film, Broadway and records, including such evergreens as Here I Am, A Message to Michael, Trains and Boats, If We Only Have Love and Promises, Promises. The slightly cruder funky craze of the seventies did not really favour Warwick’s refined style of song. In those days, we heard little of her, although a recording with the Spinners Then Came You sold a million copies. Soon after her first platinum album Dionne was released. 1982 saw her hit record Heartbreaker with the Bee Gees, and in 1985 she was awarded her fifth Grammy Prize for her gold album Friends. Dionne Warwick seems immune to the ravages of time and there is no dispute that for lovers of black dance music, this promises to be one of the most memorable concerts of the year.
