The Russians have the balalaika, the Greeks the bozouki, the Italian the mandolin while the Croats have the tambura. There are over 30000 tambura players in Croatia, in ensembles both large and small, in folk groups and schools, and played by professionals and amateurs. The Croatian Tambura Orchestra has 21 players drawn from towns and villages. The majority are amateurs; they all are musically trained and many have graduated from music academies and selected following auditions. Besides Croati...an folk music, the orchestra plays tambura pieces by Croatian and foreign composers, written exclusively for the instrument, as well as arrangements for tambura orchestra. We shall here among others Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2, Brahms’s Hungarian Dance no. 6, and Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nacht Musik.
