The bohemian singer-pianist giving his first Hungarian concert at Müpa Budapest and one of the most multi-faceted figures in contemporary popular music is the Montreal-born Jason Charles Beck, who upon resettling in Europe at the turn of Millennium became Chilly Gonzales "the sad musical genius” (although he now tends to leave out both "chilly” and the word "sad”). Classically trained and comfortable with the use of jazz techniques, this artist who proves his mettle as an alternative rocke...r, rapper and electro-pop performer emerges as a true showman at his piano concerts, sometimes unshaven and dishevelled, sometimes in a bathrobe and slippers and sometimes in an elegant suit.
He is most widely known through his collaborations: as a keyboardist, co-composer and/or arranger/producer, he was worked together with performers of such diverging styles as the dance-punk sex witch Peaches, the indie-folk diva Feist, pop standard-bearer Marina And The Diamonds, primal rocker Iggy Pop, electro-soul singer Jamie Lidell and rap star Drake - also winning a Grammy as a collaborator on Daft Punk's most recent album, Random Access Memories.
Gonzales, who won a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for longest solo performance with a 2009 piano concert in Paris that lasted more than 27 hours, has enjoyed his greatest individual success to date with his 2004 album Solo Piano, built around classical-sounding instrumental compositions, which he continued in 2012 with Solo Piano II. His Budapest solo appearance will feature a varied programme from his meandering career: "all kinds of songs from lots of different records, with a few new, unreleased compositions as well.”
