The Republic of Cape Verde, after it gained independence from Portugal in 1975, had to face up to serious economic problems. The formerly effervescent harbour trade went into steep decline and many of the inhabitants went abroad to flee drought, hunger and unemployment. Of the indigenous musical trends, it was the nostalgic-melancholic morna which most perfectly reflected the prevalent sense of estrangement between family members and lovers – and Cesaria Evora has now become an ambassador of thi...s art form, travelling with a diplomatic passport. Evora was born in 1941 and until 1987 was known as a singer in the harbour bars. Then an émigré contemporary persuaded her to tour Portugal and organised a recording session. There, she met the producer José da Silva and before long, the “bare foot diva” became one of the most sought after artists of the world music scene. She has now recorded ten rapturously received studio albums and with her exceptional voice and performing charisma, conquered the world’s leading concert halls – last year and the year before, she also bewitched audiences at the Palace of Arts.
