Bill Frisell – guitar, Tony Scherr – double bass, Kenny Wollesen – drums "I like to have fun when I play and I like comedy. […] It's like a real world when I play, where I can do all the things I can't do in real life." So says 57 year old Bill Frisell, who many regard as the most American jazz guitarist of them all, a master of rock, country and blues. As a child he played clarinet and saxophone and when he was four, built his first guitar from cardboard. In the end, it was the guitar that won... the loyalty of his heart after hearing Wes Montgomery. Not long after, he entered Berklee in Boston where he was able to play with such distinguished jazz musicians like Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, Mike Stern, Vinnie Colaiuta, Tommy Campbell and Joe Lovano. He published his first CD in 1982, called In Line and this led to a long standing collaboration with ECM. Since 1987 he has been the faithful composer with Nonesuch, a regular guest at the cult New York underground club Knitting Factory and has also partnered the likes of Jim Hall, Don Byron, Charlie Haden, David Sanborn, Marianne Faithful, Elvis Costello, Ron Carter and Paul Motian. Ever since his record Quartet won the “German Grammy”, the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis, no year has passed without one of his records winning some sort of prize. Not everyone knows that he is also the composer of the sound track of Wim Wenders’ film Million Dollar Hotel. His flowing, floating, storytelling style of guitar playing moves effortless across the most diverse styles and raises the projected visual images to a new level. Back in the nineteen nineties he composed music to some of Buster Keaton’s classic silent films. On this occasion, besides Keaton’s work, we’ll see work by Bill Morrison and animations by Jim Woodring, which will be gifted a new dimension thanks to the Bill Frisell Trio.
