Even their first album was a gold disc, and a long series of performances in Hungarian festivals and competitions won them countless awards and other distinctions. The...y have a following measuring tens of thousands and at their concerts, they have played with such world stars as Americans Milt Jackson, Freddie Hubbard, Al Grey, Buddy Tate, Joe Newman, Buddy Wachter, Henry Questa, Joe Muranyi, Eddy Davis, Cynthia Sayer, Harry Sweet Edison, Albert Nicholas, Wild Bill Davison, as well as Europeans Chris Barber, Kenny Ball, Huub Janssen and Acker Bilk. Their international career began in the sixties in the neighbouring countries, and in the seventies, played in the West for the first time. Their successes in America began in the eighties and in 1987, reached a climax when President of the United States, Ronald Reagan gave them an award for their work in representing American jazz to such a high standard. Each year, the Benkó Dixieland band gives 200–250 concerts both in Hungary and abroad. They have just released their seventieth album and have featured in over 130 hours of television shows. Each year, over 600 million viewers view their TV programmes and reports worldwide. They regularly tour in the USA, the Far East. They are the travelling ambassadors of Hungarian and New Orleans jazz.
