András Berecz, who won the Kossuth Prize in 2011, believes that the storyteller's role is to inject new life into old stories. But Berecz does not just retell old tales: he is constantly on the lookout for new ones, too. Though born in Budapest, he learned his narrative style, craft and traditional culture from his mother, daughter of the famous Kunhegyes dancer and folk singer Gábor Tanka. He spent the early part of his career among the ethnic Hungarian Csango people of Moldavia, later explorin...g Transylvania, Vojvodina, Somogy, Nagykunság and Nyírség. He has also researched and translated into Hungarian beer songs in praise of brotherhood from the Russian republic of Chuvashia. Most recently, Berecz compiled a collection of Székely folk songs and stories in Gyergyó (Gheorgheni, Romania), which he performed in his Új út teteje (Top of a New Road) production. Tonight's concert will focus on the rich treasure of folk songs and tales from the town, which have contributed heavily to renewing and raising the global status of Hungarian music. Zoltán Kodály, who first began collecting Transylvanian folk songs in Gyergyó, wrote of the Székely traditions: “It blows over Hungarian music like a fresh spring breeze into a closed room. It remains to be seen who will fare better: He who bares his chest to it, or he who retreats from the cold into his gown… This is the path of renewal that must also be followed by Hungarian song if it does not wish to waste away in increasingly colourless self-repetition.” Berecz sandwiches these songs around fantastic stories of the inside-out bear which also turns time inside-out when it forgets to bite, and of the bald fox whose house burns in minus 30 degrees.
