A tiny island in the Indian Ocean where even today people... live in a symbiosis of music and dance. Where dance in the 21st century is still an indispensable part of temple rituals and official ceremonies. Where wearing headwear with vibrant silver and mother-of-pearl discs, striding with demonic movements to ancient melodies and rhythms that evoke magic are a reality. Sebatu’s musicians and dancers evoke the past and show the present in their programme Ancient Rhythms of Bali. It wasn’t until 1969 that the melodies of this tiny village were first recorded and it transpired that Sebatu has always been unique, both historically and culturally. The music is quite different to that of other settlements on Bali. These rare melodies and movements from the rituals of the people living here soon became known in the West: over the ensuing three decades, this music has travelled from the Philippines to Japan and Western Europe, all the way to America and they have become one of the indispensable “accessories” of world music festivals.
