Romano-Sclavis-Texier: 'African Flashback' One of the most irresistible and most flexible more-than-jazz co-operations of the European music scene is the casual teaming up of veteran French bassist Henri Texier and Italian drummer Aldo Romano. This is the third occasion they work together with the excellent clarinettist and saxophonist Louis Sclavis on a joint project under the aegis of Label Bleu. All three participants composed pieces for the production, which are all reactions to the ar...ound 2500, fantastic African genre pictures of photographer Guy Le Querrec. These photos will be displayed on a nearly 100 square metre large screen during the show. The expressive photos reflect all rhythms and thoughts of the concert, just as the music also attempts to touch the atmosphere of the photos; thus the two artistic forms gracefully carry the audience away together. The music sometimes evokes the elegant swing of the highest quality „straight ahead” jazz; sometimes it seems to be the music of a merry, countryside wedding; and at instances it is a virtuoso cacophony, like traffic jam on a hot, summer day. At another point, the music resembles the funky music of the late ages of the Miles Davis Band. The latter resemblance is owing to Romano, who easily changes from the rich, African percussion sound to strict, unyielding drum rhythms. Sclavis’s clarinet and saxophone play is at times lyrical, and it is rough and free at other times. Texier’s bass grooves would make up a whole record in themselves alone. This is a true, royal delicacy. The trio will perform its new piece in Hungary for the first time on 3 April 2007 in the Palace of Arts.
