The long-awaited opening of the Folk Music Faculty at the Academy of Music in Budapest provided the initial pretext for a large-scale gala concert to be held at the Palace of Arts. The concert, focusing on the relationship between folk traditions and composed music as exemplified by the work of Bartók and Kodály, met with huge success in January 2008. This prompted Müpa and the staff of the Folk Music Faculty to organise a “celebration of folk music” on an annual basis. In 2013, the “old masters...” of the genre will once again take to the stage with the cream of the younger generation to give a joint concert of folk music from the traditions of both Hungarian and other national ethnic minorities.
