The great violinist and teacher Yehudi Menuhin announced the first International Music Day in 1975 as chairman of the UN International Music Council, and this year the event celebrates its 37th anniversary. In his words of welcome to honour the first International Music Day, Menuhin wrote: “Words have very often been abused, particularly as a consequence of the ever-increasing ignorance in today’s society. Music, however, continues even today to provide a means for people to gain mutual understa...nding. (…) I would like to encourage every town, village and country to hold a variety of musical events on this day. I would be happy not only for works both old and contemporary to be heard in concerts and on the radio, but also for singers, choirs, jazz musicians and important performers of classical music to appear spontaneously on the streets and squares to play music together.” It is based on his call to action, which remains as relevant as ever today, that we have put together this year's International Music Day concert. The event features the Aladár Tóth Music School and its young musicians, winners of international and domestic awards, performing both classical and jazz pieces with the school's successful ensembles.
