Musical talent becomes apparent at an early age. The history books write of dozens of wonderkids who showed remarkable ability even when they were very young. They mastered their instruments, were able to read music and could play by ear. Performing in front of large audiences, these prodigies may have dazzled adults accustomed to virtuoso musicians, but only a select few are remembered today. There are even fewer composers who lived up to the promise of childhood to produce lasting works. Among... the rare success stories are Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Gustav Mahler, and the Hungarian duo of Ferenc Liszt and Béla Bartók. Today's concert features extracts from their childhood works, fittingly performed by highly talented young musicians. The theme, therefore, is talent and all that is necessary for it to bloom and develop – all the struggle, disappointment, suffering, success and joy needed to scale Mount Parnassus, home of the Muses.
