Featuring singers of the Hungarian State Opera House, the Nyíregyháza Cantemus Children’s Choir and the Szolnok Symphony Orchestra Conductors: Dénes Szabó, Gergely Ménesi Zoltán Kodály: Háry János – extracts from the musical play Children’s choruses Marosszék Dances The Háry János story was premièred by the Hungarian Royal Opera House in 1926, but it only attained its final form two decades later. Meanwhile, Zoltán Kodály removed several scenes, and incorporated the Recruiting Song, the... Kálló Double Dance and the Military March at the suggestion of directors of subsequent performances. This is one of the few works which did not suffer as a result of excisions, omissions and the enhancement of certain scenes suggested by others. Kodály composed 78 choral works for children's (and women's) choir. The majority tends to be settings of folk songs or folk texts, and only 15 were inspired by poems. The notion of a rondo comprising of folk material is found early in Kodály but his version of the Marosszék Dances for piano was not played until 1927 at the Academy of Music. Toscanini inspired the orchestral version when following the triumphant performance of Psalmus Hungaricus in Milan, the Italian conductor became friends with Kodály. The orchestral version was premièred in late 1930 in Dresden and Budapest had to wait for a few days before it heard this great work for the first time.
