The last concert in the Children's Season is a genuine winter treat of symphonic music written for children. Leopold Mozart's Toy Symphony for strings, oboe, French horn and toy instruments (ratchet, toy trumpet, children's drum, triangle and instruments imitating birdsong) is usually performed around Christmas. For a long time, the seven-minute symphony in three movements was attributed to Joseph Haydn, but recent research has shown it to have been the work of an Austrian monk named Leopold M...ozart , who composed a large number of similar pieces featuring toy instruments. It is only natural that these instruments will be played here by children. Another piece with winter as its theme, but this time undoubtedly composed by the senior Mozart is the Musical Sleigh Ride (Musikalische Schlittenfahrt), which tells the story of a winter journey to a ball with the help of a variety of orchestral instruments. The interval will be followed by some of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's piano pieces written for children, this time in an arrangement for symphony orchestra and elegantly accompanied by brief etudes performed by young ballet students.
