In 1945, the British Ministry of Education commissioned Benjamin Britten to write music for an educational film intended to familiarise young people with the instruments of the symphony orchestra. The music he composed for the documentary, entitled “The Instruments of the Orchestra,” was later adapted as a concert piece. Britten divided the orchestra into four families of instruments: strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. In the introduction, the theme of the Rondeau movement from Purcell’s ...Abdelazer suite is initially played in its original from by the entire orchestra, then by each family of instruments of the orchestra in turn: first the woodwinds, then the brass, then the strings, and finally the percussion. Each individual instrument then performs its own separate variation – including instruments which are usually only heard in a full orchestra – before the work concludes in a fugue. In this extremely complex, polyphonic final movement, the instruments enter in the same order in which they were presented in the variations. Ages: 8–14 years Presented by: Palace of Arts
