Our knowledge of European music is extensive, spanning the musical treasures which the Old Continent has bequeathed to us in perpetuity over the centuries: we know the melodies and rhythms, the instruments and tones, and we can hum the most popular tunes. Europe, however, is not the world; moreover, there are cultures more ancient than ours which more faithfully preserve their distinctive individual styles. Getting to know the music of these cultures is a particularly exciting adventure for the ...European ear, and India for one represents a veritable treasure trove – not only because it is the world’s second most populous nation, home to close to one fifth of the Earth’s inhabitants, but also because it is in this vast country that the last great living musical language is cultivated. For while the masterpieces of European music by the great composers of the past can be regarded as jealously guarded museum pieces to be admired from a distance, the roles of the composer and the performer in Indian music are not so clearly divisible. Indian music lives, and for more than three decades the Calcutta Trio has plunged deeper and deeper into this magical musical culture, their highly successful concerts resonating to the traditions of 3,500 years of Indian classical music. All this they achieve thanks to the most authentic sources: sitar player András Kozma is the sole European student of the world-renowned Indian master Ravi Shankar, while tabla player Péter Szalai learned under Ravi Shankar’s former regular accompanist, Ustad Alla Rakha. András Molnár also spent many years studying in India, learning to play the tambura as an accompanying instrument.
