The magic and mystery of the faraway Orient has kindled the imagination of composers for centuries. As the Ottoman Empire threatened the whole of Europe, the music of the East came into close contact with the music of Europe. Turkish sounds and Janissary music – and coffee! – first inspired the composers of the Baroque period, and any number of Oriental-themed operas remained in fashion into the age of the Viennese Classics. Romantic composers also gladly turned to the fabled Orient for inspirat...ion, particularly the Russians, whose empire stretched as far as the countries and cultures of the Far East. Puccini began composing Madame Butterfly, which is set in Japan, at the time of the renaissance of Orientalism, while the French composer Maurice Ravel wrote five children’s pieces under the title of Mother Goose at around the same time.
