The highly successful series of youth concerts by the National Philharmonic Orchestra, which has been compiled thematically this season under the title The Magical Orient, again features a work by Mozart. As usual, it is condensed and concentrated down into the most exciting moments and scenes. At the same time, the concert gives a picture of the stylistic and cultural background of the period, while naturally emphasizing the values of Mozart’s music and providing great entertainment for all the... family. This is also guaranteed by the presence of Sándor Kovács as presenter, known for both his deep knowledge and sense of humour. Following a break with the prince-archbishop of Salzburg, Mozart moved permanently to Vienna, where his first important opera commission was The Abduction from the Seraglio. In the wake of the première of this opera Singspiel, on which Mozart worked with great enthusiasm in 1781-82, it went on to become the most successful work of musical theatre in the German-speaking countries and was performed in more than forty theatres over the ensuing decade. It was pure coincidence that the work’s leading female character happened to be called Konstanze, who shared her name with Mozart’s wife. The oriental feel of the drama is created by the boisterous music of the Janissaries in the overture, while the plot is genuinely action-packed. An important role is assigned to elements designed to make the audience laugh, such as the amusing situations that arise from dressing up and the clumsiness of the characters. Just as in a good film, there are tense, “hairy” situations alongside the humour, as the audience anxiously waits to find out whether Belmonte will succeed in rescuing his sweetheart Konstanze, who has been kidnapped by pirates, along with her maid Blonde and Belmonte’s servant Pedrillo.
