Featuring: Symphony Orchestra of the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music and students of the vocal and opera faculty Conductor: Péter Oberfrank Director and host: Balázs Kovalik Mařenka lives in a Czech village and falls in love with Jenik who is not from the village. Her parents want her to honour a commitment to marry the son of wealthy landowner Micha. Since the son from Micha’s first marriage has disappeared, the candidate is the stuttering Vasek. Mařenka succeeds in talking him out of marria...ge, saying it only brings trouble. Meanwhile, matchmaker Kecal persuades Jenik to give up Mařenka. The lad also signs a contract, agreeing that Mařenka can only marry one of Micha’s sons. The girl is embittered when she finds out that she is a “bartered bride”. The complications are soon resolved: it turns out that Jenik is in truth Micha’s long lost son and so they can enjoy their love and adhere to the terms of the contract. This is the story that Bedřich Smetana (1824–1884) chose to set as the basis for his opera. He is to Czech music what Ferenc Erkel is to Hungarian, having created Czech national opera. In the music of The Bartered Bride we hear Czech dance melodies and also folk songs in the vocal parts.
