The structure of concerts in this series introducing Europe's key musical regions is based on clear culinary associations. Yet, in reality, the make-up of these performances closely follows the traditions of classical concert programmes, just as the courses appearing on a menu are rooted in convention. The hors d'oeuvre or starter is represented by an overture, while the dessert is a lighter, more popular piece. In between, the musical main course is provided by a more substantial cyclical work..., which the musical presenter introduces in the first part of the concert and is performed in full after the interval. This first concert explores Europe's northern shores and the fascinating colours and flavours of the peoples that inhabit them. With his symphonic works on historical themes, the music of Jean Sibelius has been embraced by the Finnish nation even in preference to the official national anthem. Edvard Grieg learned much from the German composers of his age. The influence of Schumann's work of the same title is apparent in his Piano Concerto in A minor, for example. Yet every note he wrote down – and therefore each movement performed in concert – carries with it the unmistakable sound and atmosphere of Norwegian music. Served up as “dessert”, Hugo Alfvén's lightly toned rhapsody conjures up the Swedish celebration of Saint John's Night, the “day” of the year when the sun barely sinks below the northern horizon.
