The structure of concerts in this series introducing Europe's key musical regions is based on clear culinary associations. Yet, in reality, the make-up of these performances closely follows the traditions of classical concert programmes, just as the courses appearing on a menu are rooted in convention. The hors d'oeuvre or starter is represented by an overture, while the dessert is a lighter, more popular piece. In between, the musical main course is provided by a more substantial cyclical work..., which the musical presenter introduces in the first part of the concert and is performed in full after the interval. Russian cuisine and music are typified by strong, distinctive flavours, yet they are connected by a thousand threads to European traditions. Modest Mussorgsky is among those composers who found his voice in the music of his own people. As he wrote of the first piece of music to be heard here in a letter to a friend: “I have displayed the contents on the title page of the work: 1. Assembly of the witches, their chatter and gossip, 2. Cortège of Satan, 3. Black Mass, 4. Witches' Sabbath. […] The form and character of my piece are Russian and original.” There are other flavours to be found in the music of Piotr Tchaikovsky. The concert piece composed from the familiar ballet captures the most striking musical moments of this powerful love story, which also rank among the most beautiful moments of confluence between Russion and European musical cultures. Only very rarely heard in Hungary, Dmitri Shostakovich's The Limpid Stream was also originally conceived for ballet. The light-heartedness of this work reminiscent of the music of a circus band bears testament to the composer's outstanding sense of style and humour.
