What do you need to be able to do to wave a magic wand at a hundred musicians to get them to play together in perfect harmony? What secret messages does the conductor send to the orchestra, and what are those strange symbols being sketched in the air with his stick? Tempo, power and mood. It is enough to show these with his movements, or is there more involved? To be able to realise one’s musical ideas with the help of the orchestra, you need to know about music, be a fine teacher, sometimes a psychologist and also a performer with the gift for moving audiences. This evening, Liszt prize laureate Gábor Hollerung, conductor of the Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok will be talking about conducting and the long and bumpy path that has to be traversed to become one. He is not just going to talk, in the first half he will show us the tricks of the trade and involve the audience in the playing with music. In the second half of the concert, the audience will acquaint themselves with some splendid musical humour. The variations by Ernő Dohnányi are based on an old French children’s song. After the weighty and serious orchestral introduction, the lovely tune is heard with such simplicity that we can’t help but smile. It is as if a little child has been let lose on the piano. Once the theme has been introduced, Dohnányi lets his imagination and virtuosity run free. As he himself wrote on the score: “For the joy of friends of humour, for the annoyance of others”.
