CONCERTOS FOR THE YOUNG When we talk about music, we often use expressions such as sound colour, melodic lines, melodic arches and musical forms. We often find musical expressions in discussions about art, such as the harmony of colours, or the rhythm of lines. Music, which reaches the listener through their ears and the visual arts, which produce artefacts for the eyes, are in truth not so far apart. It is no surprise then, that there are pictures and statues created under the influence of a... work of music just as there are a great many works of music inspired by a piece of fine art. One of the most famous is the masterpiece by the great Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, his Pictures at an Exhibition. Originally, Mussorgsky composed the work for piano and each piece is based on a painting by one of his friends. However, the story of the work does not end here. This marvellously inventive piano music inspired a second composer, the Frenchman Maurice Ravel, to see if he could arrange it for orchestra. Ravel did not change the original notes of the piano piece, so how does the orchestral version differ from the original? It is because the piano – although it can be played with great variety – produces only a single sound colour. An orchestra by contrast can produce a virtually infinite number of them. At today’s concert, we hear some of the “pictures at the exhibition” and observe the differences between the music when played on the piano and by a full orchestra.
