“To my dear little Chou-Chou with the tender apologies of her father for what is to follow.” Debussy wrote this famous dedication for his set of piano pieces, Children’s Corner which he composed in 1908. There is no consensus what Debussy was apologising for, perhaps because these six movements which evoke the world of children with such love and good humour rather exceed virtually any child’s technical abilities. So Children’s Corner is not really a children’s piece. Modest Petrovich Mussorgsk...y’s Pictures at an Exhibition was originally written as a piano piece, inspired by a posthumous exhibition by one of his artist friends. The experience drove Mussorgsky to work with irresistible power. “Hartmann (the painter) is burning on me like “Boris” did (Mussorgksy’s opera) – the notes, the ideas swirl around me, I snatch at them and can barely get them onto paper... I would like to finish it as soon and as well as possible.” As for its success, we have only to note its unbroken popularity and the many transcriptions and arrangements it has inspired ever since. At this concert, we shall hear these two musical “picture books” in versions for percussion band performed by the Talamba Percussion Ensemble.
