Haydn: Symphony in G major (“Drum Roll”), Hob. I:94 (extracts) Leopold Mozart: Children’s Symphony Leopold Mozart: Symphony in G major (“The Hunt”) Featuring: MR Symphonics, students of the Béla Bartók Music College Vác Conductor: Ádám Fischer A great many people in the world welcome the New Year communally. This is why it has become a tradition globally for concerts to be arranged for January 1st. The Palace of Arts joined this tradition in 2008. The man who devised and conducted that fi...rst concert, Ádám Fischer decided to also give a shortened version of the evening concert (Haydn’s The Creation) for children that same afternoon, with the work explained for the youngsters. 2009 follows a similar pattern. We shall hear works, which because of their surprise value or humour are a guaranteed success with young audiences. The first work on the programme is timely because this year we remember the two hundredth anniversary of Joseph Haydn’s death. Shortly after the première of his Drum Roll Symphony British audiences christened it the Surprise symphony. Listening to it, we get an instant sense of the great composer’s life long mischievous sense of humour. For many years the Children’s Symphony was thought to have been composed by Haydn but we now know it was the work of Leopold Mozart who is mainly celebrated by the succeeding generations for his work as a highly influential teacher. This work features a string orchestra supplemented with toy instruments to create a “symphonic” effect. In this performance, children will play the rattle, toy trumpet, children’s drum, bird imitating devices and triangle. The Hunt Symphony is also a tribute to Leopold Mozart’s humour. Aiming for the greatest fidelity to nature, he depicts the sounds and impressions of hunting with devices, which overstep its symphonic boundaries, but nonetheless provide pleasant entertainment for those sensitive to musical humour.
