Kodály's folk opera relates the sensational adventures of the hussar Háry János from Nagyabony. With his wits, strength and courage, Háry overcomes every situation, taming the wildest horse in the imperial stables and defeating Napoleon single-handedly. His loyalty is unshakeable: declining the hand of Marie Louise, he chooses his homeland sweetheart Örzse instead and his humble village of Nagyabony over the imperial throne.
What is fairytale and what is reality? Can the two even be separ...ated? Barely - and this duality is beautifully represented in this unusual and exciting performance, in which the figures in the story come to life as puppets, only to assume flesh-and-blood form whenever they break into song. Children play an active part in each episode, not only in singing the familiar and popular folk songs from the opera but in joining in with the play itself.
