“It was a beautiful sunny morning. Peter sauntered through the streets, but met nobody. The musical instruments generally only started work in the evening, no one had woken up yet in Harmonia and the streets were empty. The invisible magician Fantasia led Peter to the house of the Strings. He boldly rang the doorbell, and the door was soon answered by a charming little violin girl. She appeared not in the slightest bit surprised at the sight of the visitor. She was used to people, even to human ...children. ‘What’s your name?’ – she asked, beckoning the guest inside. ‘My name is Peter the Musician. I’m looking for the Melody.’ ‘We have a lot of Melodies, perhaps even the one you’re looking for. Just come on inside.’” It was a wonderful children’s book by Klára Chitz, published in the 1950s that provided the entertaining 20th century composer György Ránki with the idea to write his fairytale opera The Adventures of Peter the Musician in Instrument Land to the brilliant verse of József Romhányi as a way of introducing young listeners to classical music and the instruments of the orchestra in a witty and colourful way. In the course of his adventures, Peter the Musician meets various instruments and takes part in a scandalous orchestral rehearsal. He discovers the magical sound of the organ, the Queen of Instruments, explores Sheetmusicland and escapes from the clutches of the Accidentals. Reaching Muzakland, he attends a music festival where he finds the lost melody, the theme of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy. Presented by: Hungarian National Philharmonic
