After their highly successful performances at the Opera Playhouse programme in recent seasons, the Budapest Strings are now presenting a new youth series, which is now open to both kindergarten and primary school children, regardless of gender or year in school. What's more, these introductory sessions of the Music Stool series are sure to hold surprises for adults as well.
What do those black and white noteheads means? And what did they mean in the Middle Ages, when they were also strangely angular? What information and instructions did Mozart write in his scores, and what about Brahms too? And why did they write in Italian, if it was not their native language? Then why is it that in pop music, instead of notated parts, we often see letters and numbers that resemble chemical symbols? We could even say that there are as many types of scores as there are scores them...selves. It is a complicated and tangled system of symbols waiting to be deciphered. But does everything really have to be played exactly as the composer wrote it? Is it even possible to play everything like that? Often the same piece sounds completely different when performed by different musicians, this is called the performer's interpretive freedom. And what fits into this freedom? Well, these are the many questions that the Budapest Strings and Tamás Lakner will help answer at their January session. In addition to his university career as a well-known music teacher and conductor, Lakner has led the Béla Bartók Male Choir in Pécs since 1980 and has been playing music in the Szélkiáltó Ensemble, which performs sung poems, of which he is a founding member, for nearly 50 years. It is guaranteed that the young audience will be in good hands: all we have to do is occupy the Music Stool, where we can travel through the history of music without moving an inch.
