Two hundred years ago, a bourgeois German family brought into the world the second of their four children, Felix Mendelssohn. Blessed with idyllic family circumstances and parents who encouraged his precocious gifts to the maximum, he was just seventeen when, influenced by his summer reading with his siblings of Midsummer Night’s Dream by Shakespeare, he composed a truly brilliant concert overture to the piece. Sixteen years later, he again picked up the play and decided to augment the masterpie...ce of his youth with a further fourteen pieces. After the première, his sister Fanny wrote about their experiences with the work and the play: “Yesterday we recalled how Midsummer Night’s Dream passed through our house, and how at different ages, we all read different roles, from Puck to Hermia and Helena... We lost ourselves in Midsummer Night’s Dream totally! Felix in particular made it his own, he followed every scene, virtually recreated everything which the indefatigable Shakespeare created... the beautiful songs, dances and interludes, figures, spirits, rude mechanicals: in his art, he perfectly brought himself to the same level as Shakespeare.” Since then, Mendelssohn’s incidental stage music has been performed frequently and in many different guises. The joyous virtuosic Scherzo has inspired many, the March colourfully evoking the world of the fairies, the Intermezzo, the Notturno with its mood of the night and the well known Wedding March. The fairies of Shakespeare’s tales are now brought to life in the form of puppets and the artists of the Kolibri Children’s and Youth Theatre. With their help, we can enter the fairy tale work of Shakespeare and Mendelssohn.
