A true chef can produce an extraordinary menu even from traditional ingredients: it is not only to gourmets that we offer the second programme of the Musical Dissection series. Combining the influences of popular music, French chanson, jazz and folk in a unique style, Szeder (also known as Krisztina Szeder-Szabó) will "partner” this time with Gustav Mahler, the most influential Austrian composer of the turn of the last century. In this friendly encounter, complete with expert explanations, you can find out how, deep down, surprisingly similar ingredients are to be found in some extremely diverse musical landscapes. True fusion cooking, Müpa Budapest style!
Pop music can also be serious, and classical music is not necessarily heavy-going. The Musical Dissection series is built around this premise. Whatever your age, attentive listening is the key to understanding music. Informing the audience about the parallels and similarities between Mahler's music and the songs of a successful contemporary singer will be presenter Gergely Fazekas. Szeder and her ensemble, however, will not be the ones presenting Mahler's song. Mahler's song will be presented by... baritone Attila Erdős of the Hungarian State Opera and pianist Alexandra Balog, who splits her time between London and Budapest. Szeder's 2014 composition Reggeli dal ("Morning Song") will give the morning just as much musical form and metaphorical significance as Mahler's 1885 lied Ging heut' Morgen über's Feld ("I Went This Morning over the Field"). Although the two pieces are separated by more than a century and were born in completely different artistic mediums, they are actually related to each other in more senses than one might initially believe. Mapping the common aspects will be just as important an aim at this concert as reviewing the differences. And also, as we'll see: both have an important place in the hundreds of years of history of songs about the morning.
