Vienna can deservedly be called the capital of music. From the second half of the 18th century, literally epoch-making, genre-defining geniuses lived and worked here. At the start of the 20th century, it would be the representatives of the Second Viennese School who would entirely upset the musical order laid down by their predecessors. In this series, bearing the title of Vienna to Vienna in this half of the season, old and new meet in presenting works from two periods of Viennese music. The l...eading role in this concert is played by the chamber orchestra, whose versatility brought it great popularity in both Mozart’s time and among composers of the 20th century. The serenade (evening music) is a popular and entertaining genre of the 18th century, generally written for smaller instrumental ensembles. Mozart wrote his Serenade in C minor for a wind octet comprised of two oboes, two clarinets, two horns and two bassoons. The piece by Anton Webern to be heard here was originally intended as a one-movement work for orchestra, but, in time, it was expanded to three movements to take the traditional form of a concerto, while the number of performers was reduced to nine. The composition was dedicated to Arnold Schoenberg, Webern’s teacher and the leading figure of the Second Viennese School, on the occasion of the latter’s sixtieth birthday. Similarly to the majority of his works, Webern employed the twelve-tone or so-called dodecaphonic technique developed by Schoenberg in writing this Concerto.
