Conductor: Kálmán Záborszky Mozart: Sinfonia Concertante in E flat major K. 297/b – extract Emil Petrovics: Flute Concerto – extract Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 in F minor, op. 36 – extract The enthusiastic, hugely respected music teacher and conductor József Záborszky founded the orchestra in 1954 from students at the Budapest István (Stephen) Secondary School and this led to today’s King St István Music School and Music College, as well as numerous other spin off ensembles, all the way f...rom the youngest (the “Crickets”) to the Zugló Philharmonia consisting of young professional musicians led by József Záborszky’s son, Kálmán Záborszky. This orchestra and various soloists drawn from its ranks help us in this concert learn about the woodwind instruments, the flute, the oboe, the clarinet and the bassoon, which we will also meet as solo instruments. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed a Sinfonia Concertante for four woodwind instruments (oboe, clarinet, bassoon and a “guest” instrument, the horn). Each part is written especially to demonstrate the capabilities of the solo instrument. When we hear the Flute Concerto by Emil Petrovics we will marvel at the flute’s nimble virtuosic playing in the upper registers. Piotr Tchaikovsky’s popular Symphony No. 4 does not grant the woodwind solo roles but their sound can be heard continually from the orchestral texture and it shapes the mood of the entire work.
