Amadinda Percussion Group (Zoltán Rácz, Károly Bojtos, Aurél Holló, Zoltán Váczi) Drums and various percussion instruments have played a particularly important communicative and cultic role in cultures preserving numerous ancient traditions of the world – and they are still being played today. When Claude Debussy first encountered the idiophone instruments of gamelan music at the 1889 Paris World Exhibition, he wrote the following in his enthusiasm: “There were – or more precisely, despite all... the horrors that civilisation has brought, they still exist – wonderful peoples who learned to make music with the ease that others breathe. Their teachers were the eternal rhythm of the sea, the wind playing through the tree leaves, and all the subtle noise which they observed with great attention. Ancient melodies and dances preserve these traditions, which their exponents freely transform. Javan music obeys as strict a set of rules of counterpoint that makes Palestrina seem child’s play by comparison. And if someone was to hear it without the prejudice of a European ear, they will find it so enticing that they must acknowledge that our music is nothing more than barbaric noise...” The Amadinda Percussion Group in this concert will be playing partly traditional music, communicating just such ancient traditions, as well as 20th century percussion works that they inspired. Distant exotic lands, the contours of ancient cultures lost in the mists will emerge dreamlike in these pieces; legends, tales, vanished times and the memories of vanished people will come to life through music.
