There are always several layers to any masterpiece and this certainly applies to The Magic Flute, one of the most popular and frequently performed operas ever written. Littered with a plethora of masonic symbols, its plot can be interpreted as an allegorical and vibrant fantasy story – so it is no coincidence that it has been performed for children for decades. Based on a fairytale, the opera is a kaleidoscope of colour, its protagonists are starkly good or evil, while their characteristics are ...contrasting: The friendly, simple-minded Papageno, the wise old Sarastro, the treacherous serpent, the domineering, vengeful witch known as the Queen of the Night, and the noble prince Tamino, who sets off to free his imprisoned lover Pamina. As in the classic fairytales, the number three is assigned an important role in the story, but here are no such restrictions on the style of the music – the serious or lively tone can change take a comic turn at a moment's notice.
