Ever since Schumann's Kinderszenen (Scenes from Childhood), composers have regularly been inspired by the wonderful world of children. Bizet composed his own 12-movement piano series for four hands entitled Jeux d'enfants (Children's Games) in 1871, and the piece remains popular even today. The composer also successfully arranged five of these movements for orchestra in his own colourful style. It is rare to hear both versions of this work – which depicts a world of soap bubbles, babies, wooden ...horses and frogs croaking – performed in the same concert. Some 42 years after Bizet, Debussy composed a six-movement children's ballet entitled The Toy Box. Its exquisite melodies transport the listener to a wonderful world where they can almost see the toys, including a loveable elephant and a regiment of marching soldiers, come alive before their eyes. Among the most noteworthy figures of 20th century Hungarian music is composer György Ránki, who drew inspiration from folk music, jazz and pop to create grotesque characters with a strong hint of humour and irony. Prior to compositions by Stravinsky and Schubert, the audience will hear a Ránki work for brass septet written in 1980 and comprising seven movements. Four of these movements, Seven Heads – One Soul, Tiptoe Dance, Shaking Dance and Firebreathing Dance, will be performed here. The villain of the Humperdinck opera based on the Grimm Brothers story of Hansel and Gretel is a witch who lives in a gingerbread house and kidnaps the two children of the title. The witch sets about fattening up Hansel ready to bake him in the oven – but Gretel outwits the old hag and saves the boy from harm.
