Every Hungarian child probably knows that the music for the Hungarian National Anthem was written by Ferenc Erkel. But in addition to Erkel, 12 others attempted to set the verse of Ferenc Kölcsey to music in a competition announced in 1844. Among them were Béni Egressy, composer of the music for the Summons, considered the second anthem of Hungary. In the first half of the concert, the young audience will be introduced to the works that survive from the original competition, as well as the story... of the national anthem’s birth. The second half will feature Hungarian or Hungarian-inspired works by 19th century composers as performed by the Szent István Király Symphony Orchestra.
