During the three decades that Joseph Haydn was employed by the Esterházy family, he wrote two dozen Italian operas, including five for the marionette theatre. Prince Nicholas Esterházy, who dreamed up and built the new residency for the family had every reason to be proud of his court’s musical life. Empress Maria Theresa said after attending the opera we shall hear today in Vienna that “If I want to hear a good opera, then I go to Eszterháza”. It is obvious that this great compliment was primar...ily due to the court composer and conductor, Haydn. This opera, L’infedeltà delusa, will now be performed by a marionette theatre, with the collaboration of the puppet masters of the Kolibri Children’s and Youth Theatre. Their comedy has the same objective as Haydn when he used humour in his music: to make the depiction of the action in this comic opera all the more entertaining. This is the story in brief: farmer Filippo wants to marry his daughter Sandrina to the wealthy peasant Nencio, and this immediately threatens the happiness of four young people. Sandrina loves the poor peasant boy Nanni, while Nencio likes Nanni’s younger sister, the sly and crafty Vespina. Nencio appears inclined to accept Filippo’s attractive offer and abandon Vespina. The two siblings swear to prevent this unwanted marriage and vow revenge on the unfaithful one. Vespina disguises herself and cleverly brings together various strands while masquerading in a number of guises, so that at the end, like it or not, everyone gets the partner they want. Whether this is a fair ending is up to the audience to decide!
