Beethoven dedicated his Sonata for Violin and Piano in A major to a French violinist then visiting Vienna, Rodolphe Kreutzer. Although the dedicatee never performed the work publicly, his name was preserved for posterity in the commonly used title of the Kreutzer Sonata, while the piece itself would subsequently become more widely known through the novella of the same name by Leo Tolstoy. The second piece on this evening’s programme, Berg’s Lyric Suite, is in fact a string quartet whose very tit...le is enigmatic, seeming to promise a series of lyrical dances. In the attributes assigned to the individual movements, some listeners instead discern a hidden opera story: the “jovial” Allegretto, the “amorous” Andante, the “mysterious” Allegro, the “passionate” Adagio, the “delirious” Presto, and the “desolate” Largo might suggest to the audience the progressive stages of a love story. “From the beginning, it was obvious for contemporaries and scholarly observers that some secret lurks behind Alban Berg’s strange string quartet, written at the age of 40 in an unusual six-movement form. It is a secret, an almost tangible mystery enticing a resolution: a message in a bottle,” wrote the critic Sándor Kovács of Berg’s work. This secret may now be examined close up by the audience at this evening’s concert, in the company of Szabolcs Molnár and the Kelemen Quartet.
