The Fairy Queen, the so-called semi-opera by Henry Purcell was premièred in London in 1692, in a production that involved lavish sets and amazing theatre spectacle. It was based on Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare and was written for a uniquely 17th century English stage genre which featured musical, vocal and dance scenes, often only loosely connected to the plot, inserted into the predominantly prose theatre action. Contemporary English opera loved magical and exotic themes and s...o the Shakespeare original, with its fairies, scenes of magic and supernatural figures fitted the bill perfectly. In the story, dream and magic are closely connected. Oberon places magic drops into the eyes of his lover while she sleeps to play a joke on the Fairy Queen, who is acting against her will. Puck, who is in Oberon’s service, likewise casts spells on the youngsters as they sleep. The misunderstandings create some true comic conflicts and it seems impossible for it all to be satisfactorily resolved. Of course, in fairy stories, everything ends happily and after they awaken, the fairies and human heroes of the piece are fulfilled with the true magic of life: love. The opera concertante was premièred at the Palace of Arts on February 3rd 2009 directed by Csaba Káel, with the Orfeo Orchestra playing period instruments and the Purcell Choir conducted by György Vashegyi. This performance is also a celebration of the three hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the birth of Henry Purcell.
