The Palace of Arts last year launched the series Opera for Everyone to encourage young people to learn and love the genre. Aimed at 10 to 18 year olds and their family relatives, the programme pursues the same ambitions in the 2006/2007 season. Each event focuses on an opera and the Symphony Orchestra of the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music conducted by Péter Oberfrank, as well as students from the vocal and opera singing faculty present carefully selected scenes, thus displaying a cross section of... the piece. In 1875 Georges Bizet passed away as a bitter man because his opera Carmen, now one of the most popular in the world, failed miserably at its première. We now all recognise its music is superb. The motifs associated with Spanish Gypsy girl Carmen are no less the work of a genius than the languishing love songs we hear from Don José; Escamillo’s toreador song is every bit of an “evergreen” as is the opera’s soldier's chorus. Posterity has done justice to Bizet. The characters of his masterpiece and its music will be part of our opera culture forever more.
