“The general mood of the work – aside from the humorous second movement – is of a gradual transition from the seriousness of the first movement to the mournful lament of the third, to the life-affirming tone of the closing movement. The title of this symphony-like work for orchestra is attributable to the way in which the individual instruments or groups of instruments are scored in a soloistic manner, as in a concerto,” said Bartók of his own work. Serge Koussevitzky, the conductor of the 1944 ...première in Boston, declared after the performance: “It is the best work for orchestra of the past 25 years!” The Concerto for Orchestra has remained one of Bartók’s most popular and most frequently performed works ever since. The conductor of this concert, Gábor Hollerung, will speak about the secrets of this marvellous work’s success and influence, presenting it first in detail – and then in its entirety.
