Programme host: Levente Zombor If anyone undertook the virtually impossible task of counting all the existing instruments in the world, they would probably be surprised to find out that percussion instruments massively outnumber all the other types put together. Percussion instruments are as old as humanity because when two cavemen knocked two stones or pieces of wood together and repeated it because they liked the sound it made, they were making music, even if they had no notion what music i...s. Interestingly, apart from the timpani, in the first few hundred years of European instrumental music, composers barely used ancient percussion instruments. It was not until the Romantic era in the 19th century that they began to use them regularly, but even then, relatively few were employed. Perhaps the biggest turning point in terms of popularity came with the 1889 Paris World Exhibition in which an orchestra from Indonesia came to demonstrate the native music. European composers, and subsequently, their American colleagues, discovered just what a treasure trove there was to be found in the diverse sounds of the world’s many percussion instruments. In the 1930s, the first musical composition was written to be performed exclusively by percussion. These days, percussion music is immensely popular, and the essence of this music is rhythm, frequent repetition of sounds and often, immense volume. However, these instruments are capable of being played softly and with a quiet sparkle; melodic percussion instruments make it possible to perform not just rhythm but also melody. The Talamba Percussion Group is from Debrecen and introduces us to a unique and fascinating musical world.
