The last show in Róbert Mandel’s four-part series features some exciting instruments from the second half of the 18th century and first half of the 19th century. One of the main attractions is the magical sound of the glass harmonica perfected by Benjamin Franklin, but we also get the chance to hear the baryton, the favourite instrument of “The Magnificent" Prince Miklós Esterházy. This concert also brings us face to face with the ophicléide, which provided the deep bass brass tones in the orche...stra before the arrival of the tuba. We will also hear the nail violin, which bears a semblance to the traditional violin only in its use of a bow, as well as a concert piece featuring both the lute-like mandora and the Jew’s harp, the latter mostly known only through folk music.
