János Pálúr won the Paris International Organ Competition and the Landowski Special Prize and is an admired performer of the French organ repertoire. He is also the resident organist of the Budapest Fasor Lutheran Church and teacher at the Academy of Music, and his broad repertoire includes much by Johann Sebastian Bach and 20th century composers. With the world famous MR Children’s Choir he has gathered together songs written for Christmas – a selection spanning five centuries and the composers of several nations. The first half of the concert features works from the late Renaissance, early Baroque era and several works by true Baroque composers, as well as the evergreen Bach arrangement by Charles Gounod. We shall also hear the eight voice composition by the Czech humanist composer, who lived in the 16th–17th century, Jan Campanus-Vodnanský as well as a set of variations on a Christmas song written by Bach in his final years. The second half, as befits the profile of our superb guest organist, is a suitably “French-Hungarian Christmas”. We shall hear works including Olivier Messiaen’s popular Dieu parmi nous from the series La nativite du Seigneur which breaths an air of harmony. The MR Children’s Choir, formed in 1954, places particular emphasis on the works of Zoltán Kodály, two of whose marvellous songs we shall hear tonight. The culmination of the concert will feature an invitation to the audience to join in the singing.
