Zorba the Greek is the English title of the novel published by Nikos Kazantzakis in 1946 which is filled with both passion and suffering; joy and bitterness. But the positive trumps every sorrow; all troubles and pains are swept away. The novel has inspired other art forms. It became a highly successful film, directed by Michael Cacoyannis, featuring music by Mikis Theodorakis and of course, the unforgettable Anthony Quinn in the title role. In 1999, Gábor Keveházi had the notion of placing ...Kazantzaki’s heroes on the ballet stage. The two lead characters: the young introspective intellectual and the decisive, impulsive Zorba is an alliance – as in the book – based on a respect for very different approaches to and experiences of life. Their joint strength is capable of creating something new, something superb. And although their enterprise is a failure and they both suffer emotional traumas, their friendship is the symbol of hope for renewal. As Keveházi writes: “I recommend Zorba to the person who could die at any time, could lose their love at any time, who could be struck with catastrophe, who could be ruined financially at any time. To everyone, I send a message with this ballet that nonetheless… Earth is our home, this life is our life, and we have to make it happy.” Additional performance: Festival Theatre, October 29 (19.00)
