Wedding is about a simple joy of life, about the purity of the sometime combative life force and the honest will to live. About the beauty of existence. And about death. About nuptial and eternal life. The wedding is a victory over death, the triumph of life resurrecting. The Wailing Wall is a spiritual, sensual, mental, conceptual and religious symbol of humanity which has prompted choreographer Iván Markó to address the hearts and minds of today’s audience with a presentation of Jewish cultur...e and humanity, as well as personal experiences and historical tragedies from the Old Testament to the modern day in the language of dance, theatre and film. The remarkable feature of the stage setting for this performance is thanks to the splendid work of cameraman and director Gábor Szabó, the audience is convincingly taken to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. The physical presence of the dancers then creates a unique atmosphere. In Iván Markó’s classical choreography, Bolero (1985), desire drives men and women into the earth, who at the last minute rebel. The original female version and the 2001 male version (performed tonight) has toured the world over the last quarter of a century, to great acclaim in several hundreds of performances. Premièred in November 2009, Afternoon of a Faun is a reinterpretation of Nijinsky’s legendary 1912 ballet which aroused great controversy in its own time. Nearly a century since its première, Iván Markó reinterprets this dance work, now augmented with a number of Debussy piano pieces, so that this time the conductor is conceived as the principal player, whose baton is a phallic symbol. Instead of two nymphs, we find three beautiful female musicians, a flautist, a harpist and a violinist, who embody seduction. At the end of the work, the conductor metamorphoses back into a faun, the embodiment of male desire. Tickets: 1800, 3300, 4200 Ft
