The Wailing Wall is a spiritual, sensual, mental, conceptual and religious symbol of humanity that has prompted choreographer Iván Markó to address the hearts and minds of today’s audience with a presentation of Jewish culture and humanity, as well as personal experiences and historical tragedies, from the Old Testament to the modern day in the language of dance, theatre and film. The remarkable feature of the stage setting for this performance is thanks to the splendid work of cameraman and dir...ector Gábor Szabó, the audience is convincingly taken to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. The physical presence of the dancers then creates a unique atmosphere. Premièred in November 2009, Afternoon of a Faun is a reinterpretation of Nijinsky’s legendary 1912 ballet, which aroused great controversy in its own time. Nearly a century since its première, Iván Markó reinterprets this dance work, now augmented with a number of Debussy piano pieces, so that this time the conductor is conceived as the principal player, whose baton is a phallic symbol. Instead of two nymphs, we find three beautiful female musicians, a flautist, a harpist and a violinist, who embody seduction. At the end of the work, the conductor metamorphoses back into a faun, the embodiment of male desire. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherezade is a story filled with wildness and barbarism, yet permeated with the romantic world of Eastern melodies. Iván Markó starts his work in the present and then returns to the past, to a world of stories only to return to the present at the end to project the truth of the work. A lonely girl returns from a ball and under the influence of alcohol relives Sheherezade’s romantic and dramatic story. The vizier and golden slave, who embody the two types of man, appear to her in her imagination. One of them symbolizes power, wealth and violence, the other kindness and emotional fulfilment, but also human slavery. Sheherezade craves the freedom of love and not the closeted world of the harem. She incites her fellow girls to rebel again tyranny and to chose the completeness of happiness. The story reaches a dramatic conclusion. Our heroine awakes from her dream and experiences the beauties and dangers of erotic desire. Tickets: 1800, 3300, 4200 Ft
