Iván Markó was inspired to choreograph extracts from Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and Magnificat for his piece The Message of Angels; its theme is love, security, touch, the experience of flying together. It is constructed around the common denominator of Judeo-Christian culture: the Ten Commandments. It addresses something so lacking today – but does so by concentrating on contemporary problems. At the start of the third Millennium there is an unprecedented need to protect our dwelling place, the... Earth and for a resurgence in the need for people to care for one another. The Message of Angels gives light and faith, which show us the path leading to one another and helps us recognise what we share in common. “I have in my soul a suitcase which holds about fifty pieces simultaneously. Those that want to be born and escape are the pieces I make. […] With Sheherezade the pressing cause was a feeling I had that I must show women their possibilities. This is not a declaration on my part but experience. The denouement is much more dramatic than simply that we have to make a choice. Our existence has one essential property – and from this perspective it does not matter if we are talking about men or women – ourselves. With this knowledge, the shaping of our life, as much as we can influence it, depends on whether we can conquer ourselves. Environment, genetics, fate, circumstances – these don’t count from this perspective. If you can conquer yourself, no one else can conquer you. To rule ourselves, to recognise our own essence – this is the most important device in life to cope with ourselves.” Iván Markó Further performance: Festival Theatre May 8, 19.00
